Each of her projects, from the innovative design of the QT8 community, to her furniture masterpieces showcased at the Triennale, as well as her involvement in private architectural projects and creations for Riva 1920, have been extensively reported in authoritative publications such as Domus, Casabella, and even the defunct Metron magazine.

Ms. Castiglioni collaborated closely with many prominent figures in the industry, including Franco Albini, Giancarlo De Carlo, and Gae Aulenti. However, her signature work, the residence in Bocca di Magra, stands as the pinnacle of her artistic career. This residence is not only the culmination of her lifelong efforts, but also a transcendent declaration. Nestled amidst a lush forest of pine, oak, camphor, bayberry, rosemary, and oleander, it seamlessly integrates the azure hues of the Ligurian Sea with the pristine whites of the Alps into a single vista. This dense forest not only shelters her abode, but also artfully conceals her legendary story, safeguarding it from intrusive, superficial curiosity.

They chose to diverge from their original life trajectories and relocate to Bocca di Magra, committing to breathe new energy and vitality into this forgotten corner and its historical backdrop. This decision is undoubtedly a testament to their respect and continuation of Ms. Castiglionis spiritual legacy, while also injecting fresh anticipation and possibilities into the future of architecture and design.

This house is situated in a picturesque area, with a vast sea view outside its windows, and it is also an oasis rich in cultural heritage.
My grandmother once visited this place with Luigi Einaudi, Maddalena Scarzella recalled. The renowned economist and former Italian President co-founded the Friends of Bocca di Magra Association, with the aim of resisting the excessive commercialization of tourism in this fishing village. Instead, they strived to create a culturally vibrant green sanctuary with a small population. They often gathered in restaurants or the homes of doctors, and cultural figures such as my grandmother, her husband Hans Deichmann, Vittorio Sereni, Giovanni Pintori, and many others were among them. Additionally, the founding members of the association included prominent figures such as the famous writer Italo Calvino, publisher Valentino Bompiani, and literary figure Elio Vittorini.

The charm of this place stems from its inherent energy, which cultivates an atmosphere that embodies both a sense of community and independence.The story began when Einaudi approached Castiglioni with a request to design a house for her, but this vision did not materialize. However, she was so captivated by this location that she ultimately decided to build a house for herself and her partner, Hans Deichmann. Hans Deichmann, a German entrepreneur and sponsor, utilized his connections during World War II to support the Italian Resistance Movement, becoming a pivotal figure in its ranks. This occurred in the early 1960s.
Luisa graduated from the Milan Polytechnic in 1946, during which time female students were scarce, and due to the war, male students were also in short supply. She initially worked as an assistant to Albini but later ventured into independent projects alongside her peers. In her forties, she fell in love with Hans, and since then, she dedicated herself to designing houses for her close circle of friends and herself. Although she never explicitly expressed it, she later expressed regret, as she was profoundly passionate about her profession. Deichmann funded this property, a complex comprising multiple architectural structures, spacious enough to accommodate friends and intriguing contemporary figures. This narrative is intended for publication in a professional architectural journal.

Luisa Castiglioni initially designed three distinctively layered cubes that seamlessly integrated into the sloping terrain of Montemarcello, earning the moniker Yellow House. Later, she skillfully subdivided this architectural complex into individual apartments and erected a Grey House in the Cubist style on a highland beside three trees. Finally, she embarked on the construction of an unfinished annex, drawing inspiration from her observations and reflections during a visit to the Stirling Library in London years later. Castiglionis spatial design continues to emit a captivating charm: the walls undergo meticulous perspective cutting, and protruding windows foster a strong connection between nature and the interior space; the open spatial layout, complemented by minimal, versatile, and elegant furniture, exemplifies the ultimate design sensibility. A lush forest lies above the structures, while a bountiful fruit and vegetable garden, now tenderly cared for by a local lady, spreads below. Within the forest, Deichmann once concealed a chair, which served as his exclusive spot for morning newspaper reading. A long staircase with red railings, resembling a red thread, cleverly connects all the elements together.

My grandmother adhered to the design principle of minimalism and functionality, creating spaces that are both functional and imbued with spirituality. She ensured that every inch of space was utilized to the fullest, without adding any redundant elements. Her ingenious design of various windows and door frames skillfully integrated nautical elements such as teakwood, which was economical at that time, as well as blue handmade ceramic tiles produced by a local company, adding unique charm to the space. However, regrettably, the ceramic tile company has now closed down.

I spent my childhood summers in this place, known as The Shelter of Freedom, where laughter and the spirit of exploration flourished. Later, I established my life in Milan, but my heart remained deeply attached to that land of freedom. After serving as the head of the Sozzani Foundation for nearly a decade, I realized that the arrival of a new life, the impact of the global pandemic, and the unwavering support of my partner all pointed to the fact that my true home lies in The Shelter of Freedom.
