Green Gables Estate, also known as Mortimer Fleishhacker House, is located in Woodside, California, USA, at 329 Albion Avenue. It is an estate that combines historical significance with architectural aesthetics. Its main building is a two-storey British country-style mansion, designed by the renowned architectural firm Greene and Greene. The construction project began in 1911, lasted for more than twenty years, and was completed in 1935. The exterior of the building is constructed with sprayed concrete (gunite) and covered with an imitation thatched roof, presenting an idealized British manor aesthetic of the countryside.
The interior design of this manor was handled by Elsie de Wolfe, an early pioneer of interior design in the United States, the first woman to engage in interior design as a professional, one of the founders of the modern interior industry, and known as the "Mother of Interior Decoration". The cooperative institutions are the well-known design companies Vickery, Atkins and Torrey located in New York and San Francisco. In the design of Green Gables Estate, de Wolfe continued its consistent elegant and bright style, echoing the architectural concept of Greene and Greene that emphasizes craftsmanship and natural materials, creating a spatial atmosphere that is both classical and fresh. The main building of the entire estate has ten bedrooms. The interior space layout is regular and the furnishings are exquisite. It combines the details of neoclassicism with the influence of the American Arts and Crafts Movement, reflecting the architectural expression of "cultural taste" by the upper class in the United States in the early 20th century.
Green Gables Estate is not only of high value in architectural design, but also its construction background is closely related to the financial and cultural development in Californias history. Mortimer Fleishhacker is an important financier and philanthropist in San Francisco. He plays a key role in promoting the cultural and artistic undertakings in California, and this estate is a concentrated embodiment of his private financial resources and cultural concepts. This place is not only a private residence, but also once carried the functions of social interaction and cultural exchange, and is a microcosm of the upper-class social activities on the west coast of the United States in the early 20th century.
