In our exchange with Vives St-Laurent, what resonated most was their philosophy: simplicity and restraint, yet rich with emotional depth and subtle layers of memory. As Lysanne St-Laurent explained, “We believe in creating spaces that are calm, thoughtful, and quietly expressive. Nothing is overdone—just enough to feel intentional, timeless, and, at times, nostalgic.” This approach runs throughout their practice—not as minimalism in style, but as a discipline that allows light, material, and feeling to take center stage.
This philosophy is clearly articulated in the two Montreal residences, Montpellier I and Montpellier II.In both projects, what stands out are the quiet yet decisive gestures: the wooden core block in Montpellier I, conceived more like a piece of furniture than a kitchen, or the living-room sink in Montpellier II, unexpected yet perfectly logical. Underpinning it all was the trust and openness of their clients—enabling the studio to push further, and to create spaces that feel truly aligned with life.

YINJISPACE:You describe your work as creating “organic and vibrant environments” at the intersection of functionality and aesthetics—how has this philosophy materialized in your design practice?“
Vives St-Laurent:”for us, an organic environment is one that feels natural, lived-in, and emotionally coherent. A well-designed space should support daily life while also creating a sense of ease or connection. I’ve always been sensitive to how a space can make you feel, and that emotional quality is something we care deeply about in our work. In practice, this means creating spaces that are functional without feeling rigid, and beautiful without being overdone. We design places that can evolve with the people who live in them, where every element has a purpose but still leaves space for personal expression. What brings vibrancy to a space is how it’s used, how materials interact with light, and how the layout flows. Decoration has its place, but it always supports the atmosphere rather than taking over.“
The result of a collaboration between the Vives St-Laurent design studio and ATA Architecture, the project unfolds over three levels, including a garden-level floor partially buried in the natural slope. This sensitive placement allows the building to elegantly follow the terrain’s incline, deliberately breaking away from the more conventional typologies in the neighborhood, which were mostly built in the 1960s.The plan is organized around an interior courtyard, while the largely glazed rear façade opens onto the forest. From the entrance, a linear vestibule leads to a slightly sunken living room, carved into the slab. This warm space is punctuated by a fireplace and animated by a double-height ceiling, emphasized by a long vertical curtain highlighting the dramatic elevation of the volume.
Vives St-Laurent
The interior reflects the occupants’ lifestyle: elegant, refined, yet warm. Around the central core, more private spaces are arranged along the periphery: a small living room, a study, a gym, and the entrance to the basement. On the other side lies the main living area, including the kitchen, dining room, and the staircase leading upstairs. The flow between all spaces feels natural, avoiding abrupt partitions.
Designed with a sense of formal rigor, the kitchen is both discreet and spectacular. A central volume houses a hidden pantry and an integrated bench, marking the transition to the dining room. The island, made of veined natural stone, sits in the center as a sculptural element bringing daily functions together.

Upstairs, a simple double-flight staircase leads to bedrooms and bathrooms. The spacious, secluded master suite includes two distinct walk-in closets and an elegant bathroom designed for everyday comfort.
Located in Saint-Bruno on the South Shore of Montreal, the Montpellier Residence sits in a picturesque setting with its sinuous streets and mature trees. Built in the late 1960s by a local architect, it is now listed in the cultural heritage repertoire as an iconic example of Mid-Century aesthetics in Quebec. The main challenge for the design team was to achieve a significant transformation while preserving the architectural aesthetic established by the original architect. The initial mandate focused on renovating the living areas: vestibule, kitchen, dining room, lounges, and powder room.
From the vestibule, two openings lead us to the main living areas. The first entrance reveals a cozy seating area and dining room positioned at the front of the house, while the second access leads to a comfortable living room and an informal workspace.
Although the design completely reshaped the main living areas, the most significant element is the central core that anchors the entire space. It integrates the kitchen, bathroom, laundry, and storage, yet remains unobtrusive. It functions more like a piece of furniture than a conventional kitchen.
In the dialogue between Montpellier I and Montpellier II, what Vives St-Laurent pursued was not formal difference, but a design attitude that grows out of restraint. Through simple gestures, sensitive materials, and careful proportions, they imbued each space with a “quiet measure”—one that responds to both site and daily life, while allowing time to settle within. As they noted, the value of design does not lie in making noise, but in creating something that feels just as right fifty years ago as it will fifty years from now.
