The JCR renovation project of St Andrews College, designed by Michiru Higginbotham, has infused a new spirit of The Times into the historic social Spaces on the campus of the University of Sydney. This project redefines the leisure Hall located beneath the Great Hall of the main building as a gathering place that combines traditional and modern elements. The main building is one of the most representative 19th-century Gothic Revival buildings in Australia, and JCR has long been a social center and informal haven for undergraduate students of the college.

当代设计的介入，对两位事务所负责人亚当·希金博特姆（Adam Higginbotham）与米驰露·科恩（Michiru Cohen）而言，这不仅是一项专业任务，更是一场情感上的回归。二人皆为悉尼大学校友，其中科恩曾是圣安德鲁学院的住宿生，这一项目因此承载着深厚的情感联系。正如希金博特姆所言：“我们希望这个空间能与旧世界保持距离，同时深刻拥抱其遗产与传统。它应当既像一间公共厅堂，也像一间起居室。”

The involvement of contemporary design is not only a professional task for the two firm directors, Adam Higginbotham and Michiru Cohen, but also an emotional return. Both are alumni of the University of Sydney. Cohen was once a resident student at St Andrews College, and this program thus carries a deep emotional bond. As Higginbotm put it, "We hope this space can keep a distance from the old world while deeply embracing its heritage and traditions." It should be like both a public hall and a living room.

改造前，JCR因年代久远而显得陈旧，其标志性的高地酒吧（Highlander Bar）——昔日传奇派对的中心——亦逐渐黯淡。为回应学院社区的多样化需求，设计团队与建筑事务所诺克建筑（Nock Architecture）、施工方SHAPE、项目管理方Spectrum以及遗产顾问Weir Phillips Heritage紧密合作，在保留原建筑精神的前提下赋予空间新的灵活性与包容性。

Before the renovation, JCR looked old due to its age, and its iconic Highlander Bar - the center of legendary parties in the past - gradually dimmed. In response to the diverse needs of the college community, the design team worked closely with the architectural firm Nock Architecture, the construction company SHAPE, the project management company Spectrum, and the Heritage consultant Weir Phillips Heritage. While preserving the original architectural spirit, endow the space with new flexibility and inclusiveness.

改造后的JCR兼具多重功能，既学生学习与表演的场所，也是庆典与交流的舞台。设计以克制而温和的姿态介入历史语境，通过材质、比例与光线的细微控制，使空间在延续学院传统的同时，焕发出现代校园生活的开放与亲切氛围。

The renovated JCR has multiple functions. It is not only a place for students to study and perform, but also a stage for celebrations and exchanges. The design intervenes in the historical context with a restrained and gentle attitude. Through the meticulous control of materials, proportions and light, the space not only continues the tradition of the college but also exudes an open and friendly atmosphere of modern campus life.
