The exhibition opens with a floor-to-ceiling graphic charting every artist on show in chronological order, from Eadweard Muybridge (famous for his motion studies) to his Dutch contemporary, Viviane Sassen. A lone portrait of photography's grand dame, Susan Sontag, hangs quite fittingly beside the roster. Photography: Jessica Klingelfuss
Tracing the medium's key developments during the last century, the show is divided into seven core themes spanning daily life, street photography, fashion, war journalism and more. Photography: Ronald Tilleman
'Couple Kissing', by Sanne Sannes, 1962–1967. The opening 'Daily Life' room tackles the complexities of photography in a refreshingly personal way for the sleek gallery setting
'Juliette, Sèvres', by Ed van der Elsken, circa 1954
'Squatting Girl/Spider Girl', by Helen Levitt, New York City, 1980
'Tour', by Frank van der Salm, 2002
'Calais, France', from the series 'Shelter', by Henk Wildschut, 2009
Struck by the multicultural character of the Dutch population, Belgian photographer Stephan Vanfleteren created a striking mosaic of black and white portraits as part of one of the museum's commissions in 2000. Photography: Jessica Klingelfuss

Key names and amateurs are well represented alike in the 400 pieces on show, plucked from the 130,000 photographs in the museum's growing collection. Photography: Jessica Klingelfuss
The works are anchored by vitrines that include magazines and photobooks. Photography: Ronald Tilleman
'Almando Fuchsia', by Viviane Sassen, 2013
Also on show is Jan Banning's confronting series of Indonesian women forced into prostitution during World War II
'Woolworth Shopper, Binghamton', by Bruce Wrighton, 1986–1988
Downstairs, the foyer gallery plays host to a separate show: Hans van der Meer's 'Document Nederland 2014: The Netherlands - Belgium'. For this series van der Meer created a visual essay of the peculiar architectural differences in the border area between the two neighbouring countries. Photography: Ronald Tilleman
The unveiling of the wing marks another architectural milestone for the museum, which reopened last year after a colossal 10-year renovation by the same architects, Cruz y Ortiz. Photography: Ronald Tilleman. Photography: Ronald Tilleman
The façade from the castle of Count Hendrik III of Nassau in Breda has been restored for the Philips Wing, taking pride of place in the entrance of the new wing. Photography: Ronald Tilleman
Meanwhile, the museum's new Rijks restaurant - designed by Paul Linse and headed up by executive chef Joris Bijdendijk - is serving up Dutch fare and wines, with an exotic twist. Photography: See It Yourself/Jan-Kees Steenman
Studio Drift's kinetic 'Shylight' installation can be found suspended from the ceiling of the wing's 18th-century stairwell. This hypnotic light installation comprises five silk flowers, which blossom and furl as visitors come near
