Text description provided by the architects. When we were commissioned to work on this project, Utsunomiya Beauty School was in need of renovation because of two reasons; firstly they needed more space to accommodate the increasing number of students, and secondly the building was becoming too old and dysfunctional. We renovated the existing building and attached an annex on the north side. Our design intension was to express a fresh and contemporary image of beauty school.

现有的建筑由一层30年前的一层钢筋混凝土结构和一层钢结构组成，该结构后来在上面增加，并由环绕在其周围的钢架支撑。

The existing building was composed of a 30 year-old one-storey reinforced concrete structure on the ground floor and a one-storey steel structure, which was later added above, supported by steel frame wrapping around it.

我们决定拆除破旧的混凝土结构，并保留钢框架结构和基础梁.然后我们挖出了半层高的地面，插入了两层楼(一层是地面，另一层是地下)，所以旧的两层建筑在不改变建筑高度的情况下，被改造成了一座新的三层建筑。北面还有一个新的附件，地下一层，地上四层。

We decided to remove the decrepit concrete structure and kept the steel-frame structure and footing beams. Then we excavated the ground by half-floor height and inserted two floors (one above ground and the other underground) so the old two-storey building was converted to a new three-storey building without changing the building height. And a new annex, with one underground floor and four floors above ground, is attached on the north side.

附件是一个完整的砌块，用没有窗户的铝夹板完成。相反，翻新后的学校用半透明玻璃幕墙和铝制毛毯完成，教室里充满了透过外部皮肤的漫射自然光。

The annex is a solid block finished with aluminum spandrel without windows. On the contrary the renovated school is finished with translucent glass curtain wall with aluminum mullions, and classrooms are filled with diffused natural light filtering through exterior skin.

学校建筑的两端都分配给垂直流通。第一层和第二层的教室被环绕的走廊包围，学生的轮廓被投射到外面的皮肤上。三楼由中央走廊隔开，并设有两个车间，它们也被用作专业美容院。

Both ends of the school building are allocated for vertical circulation.  Classrooms on the first and second floors are surrounded by wrap-around corridor, and silhouette of students are projected onto the exterior skin. The third floor is divided by central corridor, and two workshops, which are also used as professional beauty salon, are located there.

教室和车间都被玻璃墙和玻璃门包围着，因为我们想要保持整个空间的开阔视野。学生经常被别人看到，不管他们在哪里，做什么。我们认为这是培养未来美容师的理想环境，因为他们应该时刻意识到人们眼中的美。

Classrooms and workshops are enveloped by glass wall and glass sliding doors because we wanted to maintain open view of the entire space. Students are constantly seen by others, no matter where they are or what they do. We believe that it is an ideal environment for educating future beauticians, because they should always be conscious of what people perceive as beauty.
