The New Materials Institute is a design firm founded in 2008 by contemporary artists Hiroshi Sugimoto and Tomoyuki Sakakida. Contrary to its name, the Institute for New Materials studies materials and techniques used in ancient, medieval and early modern times and works to reinterpret and revive them for the modern age.

Kanda是杉本博司为一家连续15年获得米其林三星的老牌餐厅设计的新店，位于日本东京。

Kanda is a new restaurant designed by Hiroshi Sugimoto for an established restaurant that has won three Michelin stars for 15 consecutive years, located in Tokyo, Japan. Without adding counters, 9 seats and a private room, a series of Spaces were created to better serve guests, as well as an open-air garden.

杉本博司经过深思熟虑后，为新餐厅开设了一个入口和一个等候室，合理安排柜台后面的烹饪空间的人流动线，并为包房客人提供了一个专用的入口。最值得注意的是，他使用了上好的Kasuga雪松木材，作为制作餐厅柜台的材料。

After much deliberation, Mr. Sugimoto created an entrance and a waiting room for the new restaurant, rationalized the flow of people in the cooking space behind the counter, and provided a dedicated entrance for private room guests. Most notably, he used fine Kasuga cedar wood for the restaurant counter.

Time Corridors

Time Corridors是位于安藤忠雄设计的直岛当代美术馆里的玻璃茶室和咖啡厅，杉本博司在对其进行设计时，他希望在尽可能保留安藤建筑得细节的同时，可以尝试对放置在空间中的家具进行“雕琢”。

In the design of Time Waswashimotos glass teahouse and cafe in the Naoshima Contemporary Art Museum designed by Tadao Ando, he waswashimoto, aiming to keep the details of Andos architecture as much as possible, while trying to sculpture the furniture placed in the space.

工作室采用了三种特殊的木材作为这个休息空间的主材料。其一，绳纹雪松，这是一种半化石树，在沉睡了2400年后，最近被发现的。其二，屋久木，是生长在恶劣环境中的，树龄超过1000年的树。其三，已有600年的历史的栃木树，它是一种有着白色波浪状树皮的树木。

The studio used three special woods as the main materials for this lounge space. One is the jomon cedar, a semi-fossil tree that was recently discovered after lying dormant for 2,400 years. The other is yakusaki, which is more than 1,000 years old and grows in harsh environments. Third, the 600-year-old Tochigi is a tree with white wavy bark.
