“Half of space depends on design the other half is derived from presence and spirit.”
(Tadao Ando)
Interior designer Nina Mayas family holiday home in Avalon, north of Sydney, is a fascinating dream space about light and materiality.
The house is an all-black 1980s pavilion -- just the blank canvas Nina was looking for. Nina Maya adds, Like most typical pavilion-style homes, the design is simple; The box-like volume, with large areas of glass, has an open layout suitable for modern family living.

Sydneys northern beaches, Avalon is a scenic seaside suburb flanked by sandstone cliffs and Birgola Head. Ninas husband Trent grew up in Avalon, so naturally they want their young son Harley to have a similar carefree childhood on the beach. My husband grew up in Avalon, so we were surrounded by family and friends, Nina says. . People feel comfortable at all times, and thats not what we experience in the city.
Each room is furnished with textured marble and tactile fabric, with a worn brass accent running through the cutlery, mirrors and lighting fixtures.
Nina Maya designed most of the furniture, from the bouquet lounge and armchairs to the carved vanity and stone tub in the master suite. It was a great opportunity to explore some of the more adventurous prototypes of our own furniture and lighting designs, and it was a very rewarding process, Nina recalls.
Ninas home is a true display of her creativity, with every piece of furniture, light fixture, accessory and artwork custom-made or commissioned. The designer sees her home as her aesthetic capsule; Minimal design in the neutral palette, with a focus on natural materials such as stone, stucco, weathered wood and marble, Nina adds.
The solid marble bathroom and granite coffee table both require three separate cranes to be lifted from the ground to the hotel and eventually into the home. It was an engineering feat and a logistical nightmare, but it was totally worth it in the end, says Nina.
