DI Villa Mahler

Camouflaged amidst peaceful surrounds of a southern German village, an opaque facade vertically clad in scorched wood gives way to exposed concrete on the second floor. The L-shaped monolith takes care to complement the form of its neighbouring buildings. On second glance, it reveals itself to be anything but standard. Every material, surface, and furnishing of Villa Mahler is custom-made; at once an essential part of a singular spatial composition and a testament to shared values and mutual respect between its creators. Led by architect Anna Philipp of Philipp Architekten, the residence was brought to life in close collaboration with Eichkorn, the young Black Forest-based atelier and manufactory of Felix Eichkorn and Ruben Rebmann. Grounded in the collaborative philosophy of the Bauhaus, the first manifestation of their collective exemplifies the potential of synergy directed towards the pursuit of enduring beauty.

The inception of Villa Mahler stemmed from Anna Philipps design of a radical concept for the villas outdoor area. Her vision for this residence was gradually taking shape, inspired by its idyllic, rural surroundings. The locale is serene and deeply countryside, adjacent to an ancient and captivating apple orchard. A road fronts the property, but the house is setback, necessitating a circuitous route to the tranquil garden space. This apple orchard was pivotal for Anna Philipp: it sparked her contemplation on how architecture could create a minimalist yet enticing structure. With the houses lining the road, they had to strike a balance between the residence and the street, as well as the neighboring homes. The wooden exterior is a homage to local architectural styles, yet undeniably contemporary. This connection to tradition is something Anna Philipp has increasingly cherished over the years.

Eichkorn and Annas mature practices share a common ground in emphasizing timeless design as the foundation of quality. Her design work and teaching are both rooted in rediscovering beauty in architecture, which for her, is also grounded in timelessness. A beautiful building makes people feel at home. When people work in beautiful spaces, they sense a sense of belonging. Of course, functionality is crucial too, but beauty is the soul of architecture. This is the essence that everyone strives for. For instance, in Germany, they still admire old churches and desire to work within them because they evoke a sense of purpose. For her, the most important aspect of architecture is its durability. Each approach to timeless architecture has its own method, including the choice of materials. Authenticity is key; genuine materials give buildings long-lasting vitality.

After quickly bonding over shared values, Annas invitation to Eichkorn expanded from designing a sunshade to co-designing the entire room scheme. Tailoring the functionality and ambiance of each space to the personality and lifestyle of a young artist became a top priority. The house was built to be bold and interconnected, with each room facing a different direction, creating a unique atmosphere. Her home must emanate creative energy. It should be both a haven and a source of inspiration.

The ‘living hall’, as Anna terms it, is accordingly lofty and light-flooded with its five-meter-high ceilings, floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows and open composition. Its formal rigour is tempered by the warmth of its core materials: exposed concrete, charred timber and blackened steel. The most surface was specially developed by Eichkorn to integrate it into the interior architecture and its material palette of decadent minimalism. The duo applied their trademark rigour to reflecting and testing on how each would complement the other and contribute to the overall atmosphere.

The use of Japanese charred wood for the exterior walls holds personal significance for the client, whose family originates from South Tyrol, where old barns constructed with this dark-colored wood can be seen. Another key material is glass, which introduces nature indoors and adds a soft element. Paired with handmade furniture crafted from wood similar to that of the exterior walls, it creates a harmonious ensemble. Then, there was the challenging aspect of metal, as they were searching for a specific surface treatment.

Experimentation in their workshop led Eichkorn to develop a treatment technique that achieves a rich patina for vertical panels blackened steel panels, whose subtly burnished finish sets a moody tone in the foyer. The material continues to set the tone in the kitchen, where its presence is offset by fully custom furniture pieces and sculptural objects specially developed by Eichkorn for the space – “blackened, refined, carved, scorched, brushed, cast and patinated.” Parallel to the street, a private wing spanning the ground floor and upstairs loft hosts the client’s private retreat and library as well as a guest area and ensuite, for which Eichkorn created scorched-oak bedframes and sculptural bedside tables of solid bronze.

Bauhaus
The interdisciplinary collaboration ethos of the Bauhaus permeates throughout Annas entire practice. In the Villa Mahler project, this principle is not only evident in the collaboration among the core team but also extends into a dynamic form of collective cooperation. The soft furnishing within the villa was custom-developed by Belgian textile designer Nathalie Van der Massen in collaboration with Anna. In stark contrast to the villas overall subdued color palette, a 6x6-meter golden shimmering carpet, woven from Twill fiber, linen, and gold and silver threads, according to the clients vision, was completed at the Textiel Museum Tilburg. It is intended to wear and eventually deconstruct over time. The lighting design was handled by custom lighting architecture firm PSLab, creating a lighting setup that complements the abundant natural light and tailors subtle lighting effects for each room. All of this is about how to breathe life into a space.

Just as collaboration itself, the individual components of Villa Mahler collectively create an atmosphere that transcends the sum of its parts. When all components are respected, proportion naturally emerges. Excellent design is like a musical composition, where elements such as light, dark, shadow, and space are combined. Many subtle factors need to be integrated and intertwined. When these factors can be brought together, something meaningful emerges. Their working approach allows them to preserve tradition and translate it into a modern language – this is precisely what makes the Bauhaus so fascinating. The Bauhaus created a new language, and she believes they have achieved a similar balance.

Eichkorn
Eichkorn echoes this sentiment. Ruben states that this project exemplifies the potential of collaboration, with every piece of furniture and every detail having its rightful place. Their goal is to continue developing projects with this quality and soul. For a young practice, their perspective is quite insightful. The creations must transcend themselves and stand the test of time. Felix, speaking about Villa Mahler, notes that for them, it is important to create spaces that can carry their ideas.
