BROM Residence is a lakeside residence created by the Canadian architecture and interior design firm Atelier Carle, located on a piece of land in a town in eastern Quebec that carries nearly a hundred years of family memories. This residence is not merely a vacation space; it is more like a gentle echo about belonging, memory and inheritance. The owners family was one of the earliest settlers in this area. Even now, the family members still live scattered around. This emotional bond has deeply influenced the conception and implementation of the entire project.

The project is coordinated by Isaniel Levesque, the architect and interior designer of Atelier Carle. He emphasized that the starting point of the design is not to replicate the architectural language of the past, but to construct a new narrative belonging to this place in a way that is more local and culturally responsive. Facing the architectural remains of the original wooden structure and crushed stone walls, the team abandoned the traditional preservation of the original state and instead adopted a strategy emphasizing local regeneration. The foundation and brick chimney of the old house were preserved and transformed into transitional Spaces for the new residence. Brick and stone materials were reactivated in the floor and foundation structure, attempting to establish a dialogue between the old and the new on both formal and emotional levels.

The new residence consists of three independent wooden volumes, which respectively undertake the functions of living, dining and resting. These three volumes are connected by two brick and stone structures, serving as the official entrance and the private passage respectively. The entire building is constructed in accordance with the terrain, taking advantage of the natural height difference of the site to ingeniously embed the basement within it. The design process was accomplished through collaboration between Atelier Carle, the local Quebec architecture firm BBD Construction, and landscape architect Oscar Hacche. The three parties worked together to ensure the deep integration of the building with the environment.

The project is also highly emotionally warm in the application of materials. The roof structure and wooden doors are made of wood from the old barn on the original site. The dry-laid stone walls are also recycled and rebuilt. The layout of the garden directly covers the former land of the old house, as if the old memories have been gently awakened. The interior part features natural cherry wood, dark oak, Indiana sandblasted limestone and concrete with an antique texture. These materials convey a texture and warmth that coexist with time in their fineness. Just as Levesque said, BROM Residence is a house that cannot be replicated elsewhere. It is rooted in the land and also responds to the call of memory.
