Ravine House is located in the Rosedale community of Toronto, Canada. It is a rare courtyard residence in the medieval modern style. The unique U-shaped layout is deeply embedded in the canyon and surrounds an elaborately designed central courtyard. This architectural form is relatively common in the Middle East and Asia, but it is extremely rare in North America, especially in the city of Toronto. Its layout not only offers extremely high privacy, but also effectively blurs the boundary between indoor and outdoor Spaces, bringing nature into the interior and integrating the natural environment with the residential space.

The current owner of the house, Leah Miller, lives here with her partner, Dallas Green. Green is a well-known Canadian musician and a member of the bands City and Colour and Alexisonfire, while Miller is an enthusiast of interior design and the owner of a boutique. She led the renovation design, transforming this building, which originally had distinct mid-century Japanese characteristics, into a modern home with a strong natural atmosphere. The original kitchen was mainly in bright red, with a flamboyant style, which did not match the aesthetic expectations of the two. However, the U-shaped layout of the house became the starting point of inspiration. They transformed the original Japanese garden and koi pond into a swimming pool garden that can be used all year round. It is equipped with a stone floor heated by geothermal energy, allowing for outdoor walking and swimming even in the severe winter.

Miller 以强调自然质感的方式处理内饰。原始的西部红雪松天花板经打磨后呈现柔和金色，搭配重新包覆橡木框的窗户与滑门，强化了空间与自然之间的对话。室内地面更换为白橡木板以确保视线的连续性，不干扰窗外的峡谷景观。厨房则使用拉斐尔白（Bianco Raffaello）大理石打造，在灰与桃色之间变幻的光影与 Frangipane 的拉康什（Lacanche）系列炉具互为映衬，展现质朴之美。

Miller handles the interior in a way that emphasizes the natural texture. The original western red cedar ceiling, after being polished, presents a soft golden hue. Paired with Windows and sliding doors re-encased in oak frames, it enhances the dialogue between the space and nature. The indoor floor was replaced with white oak boards to ensure the continuity of the line of sight and not to disturb the canyon view outside the window. The kitchen is crafted from Bianco Raffaello (Raphael white) marble. The changing play of light and shadow between grey and peach colors complements the Lacanche series of stoves from Frangipane, presenting a rustic beauty.

房屋后部原有的两间卧室被整合为一个主卧套间，设有浴室与步入式衣帽间。浴室内采用奶油色缟玛瑙为主要材质，天然纹理使人联想到树皮肌理。Miller 坐在 Claybrook 的椭圆形浴缸中观赏峡谷景致，已成为日常仪式。在家具选择上，她采用了大量复古作品，包括 Pierre Jeanneret（皮埃尔·让纳雷）餐桌椅、Isamu Noguchi（野口勇）设计的 Akari 灯具，并辅以 Apparatus 的现代灯光设计。庭院经过大规模重新绿化，植入高达22英尺的雪松与香草盆栽，营造出嗅觉与视觉双重沉浸的自然氛围体验。

The two original bedrooms at the back of the house have been consolidated into a master suite, featuring a bathroom and a walk-in closet. The bathroom is mainly made of cream-colored onyx, and its natural texture reminds people of the texture of tree bark. It has become a daily ritual for Miller to sit in the oval bathtub at Claybrook and enjoy the canyon view. In terms of furniture selection, she adopted a large number of retro works, including dining tables and chairs by Pierre Jeanneret, Akari lamps designed by Isamu Noguchi, and supplemented by the modern lighting design of Apparatus. The courtyard has undergone large-scale re-greening, with cedar and herb potted plants as tall as 22 feet planted, creating a natural atmosphere experience that immerses both the sense of smell and the eyes.

The architectural logic and living concept of Ravine House are an exploration of the intimate relationship with nature, and also provide a modern courtyard-style living model worthy of reference for residential design in those areas with similar climates. It is a warm architectural response, demonstrating that harmony can be achieved between humans and nature.
