This residence is located on the hillside of Moon Canyon in Mount Washington, Los Angeles. It was co-hosted by Susannah Stopford and Alejandra Murillo of Nono Studio. The project is not a superficial renovation of the old building, but a thorough recreation based on respecting the historical context. When I took over, the old house was in a worrying condition. Its structure was so fragile that it was almost collapsing, as if hanging on the edge of a cliff. However, its interior unexpectedly retains precious imprints of The Times - pine and cedar wall panels from the 1930s, as well as a stained glass window created by students of the California Institute of the Arts in the 1970s. These elements are like footnotes left by time, endowing the space with an irreplicable personality and warmth.

The designer ingeniously compared this renovation process to the traditional Japanese "tree transplantation technique" (jumoku iseki). The core of this technique, known as "nemawashi", refers to the fact that in newly developed areas, to avoid felling ancient trees, people carefully move them as a whole to new locations by gradually digging and sorting out the roots, in order to minimize damage. Just like the renovation of this old house, its essence is not to roughly cut off the connection with the past, but rather to perform a precise "root recovery" surgery - gently stripping away the fatigue of time on the structure and lightly transplanting its historical "root system" into the context of contemporary life.

The architect keenly preserved the temporal texture carried by the original building and reconstructed the space around the introduction of light and interaction with nature. The wooden veneer and simple floor materials laid inside not only continue the rough atmosphere of the original hunting cabin, but also, through the meticulous control of spatial scale and the delicate handling of details, smoothly transition it into a residence suitable for modern family life. The remaining stained glass window and the elaborately designed custom-made lamps infuse the space with a touch of craftsmanship, endowing the rational structure with an emotional aftertaste.

MOON CANYON
The renovation of the MOON CANYON residence is not a formal imitation of retro vocabulary, but rather a reflection on the essence of "living". It not only faithfully guards the connection between the site and memory, but also responds to the intricate relationship among craftsmanship, the passage of time and the emotions of the residents. The house no longer seems to be a static object but a living existence - quietly growing between the mountains and forests and light and shadow, embracing the surrounding mountains and forests, and truly resonating with the lives of its occupants.
