When a cheeky, design-loving client asked Smac Studio to build him a home in Bondi, the team was immediately inspired by his request.’ He says, ‘I wanted it to feel like someone from Los Angeles on holiday in the Mediterranean.’ Like you might be in Italy, but you might also be visiting a cool friend in Santa Monica.’
Shona McElroy, principal of Smac Studio, is deeply moved by this.’ I love the modern architecture and design of Los Angeles, so combining it with Italian theatre and classicism was right up my alley. Its luxurious without being impactful’.Shona worked with the client to set up his home and showed him her new rug collection, the Icons Collection.’ He said, ‘These rugs are incredible.’ Im so glad she has rugs all over the house.’
In a leafy neighbourhood of Nagoya, Tomoaki Uno designed a fortress-like residence called ‘Takamine-Cho House’. The 190 square metre, two-storey architectural home is situated on a sloping site. In contrast to the usual arrangement, the bedrooms are located downstairs, while all the public, social spaces of the house are located upstairs. The house is lit by different sized patios, which pour in light and create a serene natural atmosphere inside.
The house consists of two parts: a stone ‘pyramid’ and exposed concrete blocks. The two street-facing facades are windowless, creating a completely private sanctuary. Once inside, the space ranges from light and openness near the internal courtyard to soft, dimly lit corners in the pyramid. The interior is dominated by unfinished concrete surfaces, which may be considered a cold, rough material, but it actually creates a safe, cosy atmosphere for the house in Takamine Town.
