Set within Elephant Point Private Reserve in South Africa’s Kruger National Park, Tembo Tembo draws on the site’s rugged beauty and extremes. The house sits with a brutalist-like clarity in this desert landscape, with rammed earth defining its structure. The architecture plays on elements of the landscape, where sandbanks of the nearby Sabie River inform the shifting tones of the compressed earth, now solidified as part of the home’s foundation. The house is elevated slightly above the ground. This is a practical response to local wildlife and seasonal flooding, but it also adds to the sense of lightness in what would otherwise appear as a dense form. When moving inside, a concrete slab floor wraps up the walls to meet the solidified layers of rammed earth. The gesture creates a quiet continuity, interrupted only by dark timber joinery that frames views outward. Throughout the home, there’s a subtle interplay of textures and finishes. Ceilings are coffered with dark wood, layered with textural, flocked wallpaper. The detailing is refined with even lighting and curtain tracks embedded to disappear into the ceiling. In the private quarters, smoked oak flooring replaces concrete, which brings warmth to the bedrooms. Natural stone is another anchor to place. Granite sourced from across the continent—Gold Namibia, Zimbabwean black— grounds the bathrooms in an inherently African material palette. Furniture and decorative elements are curated with a careful hand. While much of the interior leans into high-end refinement, there are touches of postmodernism in select pieces —such as the sky-blue bookshelves in the bedroom, and the custom green lacquered sofa desk by Studio Asaï. Part of Studio Asaï’s attraction to using rammed earth is that if one day the home was to be dismantled, its walls would return to the earth. Water conservation, simplified electrical systems and a minimalist approach to functionality reflect the homeowners’ desire to engage with nature as intimately as possible. Tembo Tembo is designed to disappear rather than impose.
