Located on the second floor of an early 20th-century building in Kyiv’s historic center, Banda Agency’s new office feels more like a bright, generous apartment than a conventional corporate workspace. Designed by the local studio ater.architects, the 300-square-meter interior expresses the agency’s creative culture and sensitivity through a distinctive atmosphere and a high degree of adaptability. The design maintains a carefully calibrated tension between nostalgia and contemporary clarity, allowing the space to feel both grounded in its historical context and distinctly modern.

The client sought to create a comfortable environment that would feel more like a spacious, light-filled apartment than a traditional office. High ceilings, abundant natural light, and the building’s original brick structure provided a highly expressive starting point for the design. In response, the architects preserved the existing structural features while introducing a series of carefully calibrated contemporary elements, achieving a balanced dialogue between historical texture and modern expression.

The interior is defined by a soft palette of whites and creams, which tempers the raw presence of exposed brickwork, steel beams, and concrete floor slabs. All structural elements are painted white to better diffuse natural light and reduce visual noise. Natural wood finishes introduce warmth, while stainless steel and brushed aluminum elements appear in an almost sculptural manner, serving as refined accents rather than overt expressions of industrial aesthetics. Acting as a connective thread, mid-century vintage furniture plays a key role in weaving together the century-old shell of the building with contemporary design interventions.

The largest space is conceived as the social and creative heart of the office. Free of traditional desks or screens, it feels closer to a living room than a conventional workplace. A variety of seating arrangements—ranging from informal lounge corners to round tables—support casual meetings and collaborative discussions. At the center of the room, a custom-made long communal table paired with late-1980s curved plywood chairs anchors the space, while low storage units subtly define smaller zones. At one end, a raised platform that can be enclosed with heavy curtains doubles as a stage, allowing the room to easily shift between work, presentations, and events.

Inspired by the relaxed informality of a neighborhood café, the adjacent dining and kitchen area is furnished with small tables, vintage Castelli chairs designed by Giancarlo Piretti, and lush potted plants. A gently undulating stainless-steel bar counter forms a bold sculptural focal point, crowned by cloud-shaped Nuvola pendant lights designed by Mario Bellini in the 1970s. Behind it, an exposed brick wall—marked by preserved paint samples—serves as a quiet reminder of the building’s layered history. Opposite, a wood-clad volume houses the restrooms and technical spaces, while the mezzanine above accommodates the office’s only fixed computer workstation.

More than just a workplace, Banda Agency’s office operates as an extension of the agency’s creative ethos. By treating space as a framework for ideas rather than a container for desks, ater.architects has crafted an interior that is both deeply rooted and quietly forward-looking—one in which history, creativity, and contemporary work culture coexist in careful harmony.
