In the renowned Watergate complex in Washington D.C., this top-floor combined apartment was designed by Nicholas Potts Studio, founded by Nicholas Potts. The Watergate complex is widely known for a specific historical event, but it has long obscured its spatial value and design potential as a modernist architectural landmark. This project reorganized the internal logic of the building through a systematic and holistic update strategy, corrected the spatial disorder and aesthetic deviations accumulated over the years from the inconsistent renovations.

设计首先清理原有零碎而封闭的房间格局，同时移除后期加建的仿殖民装饰线脚与标准化饰面，使室内空间回归清晰、连贯的结构秩序。新的平面以轴线关系重新组织，各功能空间在尺度与动线上更适合社交与公共活动的展开。在风格选择上，设计并未刻意弱化建筑所处的时代背景，而是主动回应其历史语境，吸纳二十世纪后期富有戏剧性的现代美学，通过浓郁却克制的色调、纹样与层次变化，营造出富于深度与氛围感的整体体验。

The design first cleans up the original fragmented and isolated room layout, and removes the later added colonial-style moldings and standardized finishes, restoring the indoor space to a clear and coherent structural order. The new layout is reorganized based on the axis relationship, and each functional space is more suitable for social and public activities in terms of scale and movement. In terms of style selection, the design does not deliberately weaken the architectural context of the era it is located in. Instead, it actively responds to its historical context and incorporates the dramatic modern aesthetics of the late 20th century. Through rich yet restrained colors, patterns, and layering changes, it creates an overall experience with depth and atmosphere.

项目由事务所联合多位顶级工匠与专业工坊共同完成，涵盖鎏金、金属、石材及定制家具等多个领域，呈现出大量专属设计细节与经久耐用的高品质材料。室内陈设将二十世纪六七十年代的经典家具与当代作品并置，在“纪念性现代主义”的力量感与舒适宜居的生活尺度之间取得平衡，使这处住宅既承载其传奇地址的历史分量，也映射出当代生活的从容与精致。

The project was jointly completed by the firm and several top artisans and professional workshops, covering areas such as gilding, metalwork, stone work and custom furniture. It showcases a large number of exclusive design details and high-quality materials with lasting durability. The interior furnishings juxtapose classic furniture from the 1960s and 1970s with contemporary works, achieving a balance between the forceful power of "memorial modernism" and the comfortable and livable living scale. This residential space not only carries the historical weight of its legendary location but also reflects the composure and refinement of contemporary life.
