This coastal family residence renovation project located in Barwon Heads, Australia, embodies a restrained yet effective design approach in contemporary residential updates. The project was handled by JAK Architecture Firm. With a construction budget of approximately 600,000 Australian dollars, it achieved a simultaneous improvement in space quality and family lifestyle by preserving as much of the original building structure as possible.
The original residential structure is overall stable, but due to the lack of unified planning over the years, multiple scattered alterations have caused the buildings exterior to age and the indoor layout to become chaotic, making it difficult to meet the daily needs of young families, which focus on outdoor activities and shared spaces. The design team did not adopt the method of demolishing and rebuilding. Instead, they placed the new functional spaces beneath the existing eaves, creating a continuous relationship between the old and new volumes in terms of both visual and structural aspects. This strategy effectively controlled the construction cost while responding to the low-key and durable architectural characteristics of the coastal environment.
In terms of material selection, JAK Architecture Firm addressed the durability challenges posed by sea winds and salt fog by adopting a simple, natural and age-resistant material system. During the construction process, the original roof tiles were replaced due to limitations, and the design team then introduced zinc-aluminum alloy corrugated panels (Zincalume), which enhanced the industrial and practical features of the building in the coastal context and maintained consistency with the updated overall color scheme. Partner and architect Mike Parlapiano of the firm pointed out that placing new elements beneath the existing structure is a simple yet efficient spatial strategy that enables the old and new parts to coexist naturally.
In terms of structural adjustment, the renovation also maintained a cautious approach. By selectively removing some load-bearing walls and introducing a new beam-column system, the interior public spaces were opened up, allowing for more abundant natural lighting. Within the backdrop of the birch trees that were preserved, the daylight room became an elastic space that could change along with the growth of the children, and it also demonstrated the high degree of alignment between the design team and the owner in terms of family stage, lifestyle, and value orientation.
