Finished in 1969 after his passing, the building stands today as his final architectural testament to the nation.

If the colossal structure forms the skeleton, the interior furniture provides its warm soul. To fulfill Queen Maria I’s vision of a "well-equipped institution," architect Porfírio Pardal Monteiro looked beyond macro-scales, delving into the microscopic textures of the furniture. The desks, shelves, and chairs are paragons of Portuguese modern design, showcasing a seamless blend of clean lines and ergonomic precision.

步入阅览大厅，大面积使用的深色胡桃木家具与石材墙面形成了鲜明对比。这些家具多为1950至60年代的定制之作，椅面包裹着质感厚实的皮革，旨在为长时阅览提供极致的舒适感。每一张阅览桌都配备了精巧的独立照明，这种对细节的执着，使得庞大的公共空间依然保留着私人书斋般的静谧与尊严。

Stepping into the reading halls, the extensive use of dark walnut furniture creates a striking contrast with the stone walls. These pieces, mostly bespoke designs from the 1950s and 60s, feature chairs upholstered in rich leather, engineered for the ultimate comfort during long hours of study. Every reading desk is equipped with delicate individual lighting—an obsession with detail that preserves the quiet dignity of a private study within such a vast public space.
