Unknown Works studio transformed a Victorian-era warehouse adjacent to Borough Market in London into the Salt Salon hairdressing salon. This project transcends the traditional design framework of salons, creating a cultural third space that combines futuristic aesthetics with community care. The salon continues the long-standing tradition of the hairdressing industry as a social hub, aiming to provide a comfortable sanctuary for the community to gather and communicate. Meanwhile, through cutting-edge design elements such as the highly stylish sound wall, it redefines the multi-dimensional experience of haircare rituals.

Salt沙龙的设计理念源自创始人约翰·保罗·斯科特（John Paul Scott），这位前电子音乐制作人将沙龙视为感官交流的场所而非单纯的服务空间。建筑设计上，博罗店延续达尔斯顿店的低调临街立面风格，摒弃张扬的店面设计，采用含蓄内敛的迎客策略。这座三层历史砖构建筑被改造为具有丰富声学层次的环境。室内设计则通过声音、雕塑与表演语言的融合，重新诠释美发护理文化，将理发体验升华为融合艺术追求与文化野心的多维实践。

The design concept for Salt Salon stems from founder John Paul Scott, a former electronic music producer who conceived of the salon as a place for sensory exchange rather than simply a service space. Architecturally, the Borough location inherits the understated street-facing styling of the Dalston location, eschewing a blatant storefront in favor of a subtle and restrained welcoming approach. The three-story historic brick building has been transformed into an acoustically rich environment. The interior design reinterprets haircare culture through a fusion of sound, sculpture, and performance, elevating the haircut experience into a multidimensional practice that blends artistic pursuits with cultural ambition.

首层的聆听室作为整个空间的核心功能区，剪发工位沿墙设置，接待台与酒吧操作台合为一体，夜间可转变为活动场所。空间中央矗立着两座采用低能耗机器人成型技术数字化塑造的巨型镀锌钢扬声器，共同构成音响墙装置，其造型犹如雕塑图腾。这一完全集成的音响系统为业内首创设计。

The Listening Room on the ground floor serves as the core functional area of the entire space. Haircut stations are set up along the walls, and the reception desk is integrated with the bar counter, which can be transformed into an event venue at night. In the center of the space stand two giant galvanized steel speakers, digitally sculpted using low-energy robotic forming technology, together forming a sound wall installation that resembles sculptural totems. This fully integrated sound system is a pioneering design in the industry.

The speakers were manufactured by London-based specialist Friendly Pressure, and the architectural firm Unknown Works artistically repurposed stainless steel salvaged from the former archives of the V-A and the Science Museum. These metals, once a source of cultural heritage, have been creatively repurposed to create a new type of cultural archival space, using sound as a medium. The sound wall features a futuristic metal facade, its stainless steel surface meticulously crafted to create a unique visual effect centered around an auditory experience. Poul Kjærholm chairs complement the overall sci-fi aesthetic.

The acoustic design of the space draws on the essence of British sound system culture, aiming to create an acoustic environment that combines intimacy with collective resonance. As Ben Hayes, co-founder of Unknown Works, emphasized, sound is not only a cultural medium for expanding spatial experiences and connecting diverse audiences but also transforms the salon into a secluded haven away from the urban hustle and bustle, enabling users to achieve a state of deep concentration through acoustic enhancement.

Salt沙龙的室内材料以具有未来感的金属饰面贯穿三个楼层，实用功能构件被赋予雕塑般的艺术形态。墙面未采用传统玻璃，而是选用抛光钢材质，通过轨道砂光机手工打磨，在各区域形成细腻渐变的反射效果。建筑师对声音建筑的关注延伸至每个细节：回收泡沫座椅兼具低音吸收功能，硅胶面板有效软化混响，生物树脂灯具则保留了金属压板成型时的质感纹理。使整个沙龙如同一件随日常节奏自行调谐的乐器，既满足实用需求又融入艺术表达。

The interior materials of the Salt Salon feature a futuristic metallic finish across all three floors, giving practical, functional components sculptural forms. Instead of traditional glass, the walls are clad in polished steel, hand-sanded with an orbital sander to create a subtle gradient of reflective effects. The architects attention to acoustic architecture extends to every detail: recycled foam seats absorb bass, silicone panels soften reverberation, and bio-resin lamps retain the texture of pressed metal. The salon, like an instrument, tunes to the rhythm of daily life, blending practicality with artistic expression.

The Haircut Floor on the second floor continues the composite nature of the space. A stainless steel mirror strip runs along the curved surface of the room, with a gradient from hazy to clear, creating a unique atmosphere while balancing privacy and precision to meet functional needs. Friendly Pressure hanging speakers are interspersed among the mirrors, visually reinforcing the spatial structure and precisely controlling the sound field environment. Here, the daily act of getting a haircut is elevated to a ritualistic experience, integrating the movements of scissors, mirror reflections, and bass melodies.

The Hair Dye Floor on the third floor further explores experimental materials. A half-ton stainless steel mirror workbench is suspended, serving as both the visual center of the space and a sound-regulating element. Over time, its surface will absorb dye stains, embedding traces of the craftsmanship into its skin, creating an ever-evolving palette of colors and care marks.

The third floor also features a sink, above which hair coloring products are displayed in custom cabinets. Opalescent glass partitions and skylights complement each other, effectively filtering and softening the natural light. John Paul Scott, according to his design inspiration board, drew heavily from galleries, bars, kitchens, and industrial spaces.
