Founded in 1990, Garde Hvalsøe is a Danish design-and-manufacturing brand renowned for bespoke joinery and kitchen systems. In their collaboration with KHR Architects, their role extended beyond the kitchen to help define the overall spatial tone. Our conversation with Garde Hvalsøe revealed a spatial methodology rooted in craftsmanship: using tailor-made kitchens and interior systems as its foundation, they insist on pursuing “quality that can stand the test of time” at the levels of material and structure. As they put it, good design “is not about flamboyant form, but about a framework and foundation that endure use and the passage of years.”
Since 1990, Garde Hvalsøe has been dedicated to furniture craftsmanship. How would you define the brand’s current design rhythm and aesthetic philosophy?
Søren Hvalsøe Garde: At Garde Hvalsøe, we have a single goal: to provide tailor-made kitchen and interior solutions that unite enduring aesthetics with lasting functionality. We approach the craft with the utmost seriousness and personal commitment—either we do it to the highest standard, or we don’t do it at all; the materials we use are always the best we can obtain. Our design language is rooted in the classic values of Danish craft and design traditions. In 1992, we created our first kitchen—a timeless study in quality, elegance, and the art of furniture—and we continue to uphold these principles in everything we make today.
In this collaboration with KHR Architects, Garde Hvalsøe’s influence extended beyond the kitchen to the overall spatial tone. How do you see your role when working with architectural studios?
Garde Hvalsøe is grounded in uncompromising quality; what sets us apart from other joinery companies is our unique ability to absorb and realize the visions of architects and interior designers. We work closely with them, translating ideas into reality with a level of precision and understanding that is rare in our industry. By combining creative design vision with exacting joinery, we have become a trusted partner on the most demanding and inventive projects. Our solutions go beyond surface aesthetics, giving a space its form and order. We believe this is achieved by putting ourselves in the client’s shoes, translating their feelings into form, and allowing their story to be expressed through our interior solutions.
The Thatched Summer House is situated in a Danish area known as the Danish Riviera, characterised by undulating moraine slopes covered in grass, heather, and low trees. In an area known for its historic summer houses, with scattered small houses, often with thatched roofs, blending into the landscape. The Thatched House is located in a small grove, in a sloping landscape with views over the hills and fields.
The defining architectural element of The Thatched summer house is its distinctive, expansive thatched roof, crafted using traditional techniques. Beyond preserving a historical craft within a modern construction, thatching has been shown in numerous studies to be the most climate and environmentally friendly roofing material available. This is primarily because 98% of the roof consists of Phragmites australis reeds, a biogenic material found globally. Reeds reduce CO₂ emissions as they absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and help purify water ecosystems during their cultivation and growth.
The facade is made of thermally treated pine, an environmentally friendly method that enhances the wood’s durability by exposing it to high temperatures. This technique, known in Scandinavia for over 1,000 years and used by the Vikings, allows the wood to naturally patinate over time, embedding the building further into the area’s characteristic flora.

A bespoke Garde Hvalsøe kitchen feature fronts, backsplash, shelves lacquered in a light-yellow colour. Tall cabinet fronts are covered with zinc and the opposite side fronts are painted in the same light yellow as the backsplash. The marble tabletop and fireplace is Repen flamed marble. Appliances have been supplied by Gaggenau and BORA. A bespoke Japanese rice paper door provides soft illumination and separation between the ground floor and the first floor.
The first floor, subtly visible through an opening, houses a spacious bedroom and bathroom, accessible via a staircase near the kitchen. This staircase doubles as an inviting light shaft. The guest wing, with three bedrooms, is positioned in a separate section behind the living areas and kitchen, with access near the main entrance to ensure privacy and tranquillity for both residents and visitors.
The first-floor Master bedroom and bathroom featured a bespoke wardrobe, lacquered in light-yellow to match the same shade throughout the kitchen. The bedroom furniture combines a bespoke headboard and desktop made of Oregon Pine. A bespoke bunk bed includes a large drawer at the bottom for storage. The bathroom unit and cabinet is also crafted from Oregon Pine with a Wachenzeller sandstone tabletop, which has been sandblasted and brushed.
This thatched summer villa is interwoven with a dual vocabulary of tradition and modernity: from the thatched roof that has endured for thousands of years and the heat-treated pine wood facade to the exquisite and delicate custom furniture and kitchen details, every element responds to the relationship between nature and life. It is both a serene haven hidden in the landscape of the Danish Riviera and a contemporary interpretation of craftsmanship, materials and residential aesthetics.
