Australia, Macedon Ranges
This brick and wood house, built in the 1970s and located in the Macedonian mountains, is the living and creative space for potter Sally Rounds and her partner, interior designer Deon Hall. The house covers approximately 400 acres of land, allowing the two to maintain a moderate distance from the urban life while also enabling convenient commuting to Melbourne. For Sally Rounds, who grew up in the countryside, this relocation was not just a simple change of residence, but rather a spiritual journey back to the rhythm of natures life.
The building has completely retained the typical characteristics of the 1970s, featuring arched wooden roofs, three fireplaces, and a ground paved with bricks and slate. These unaltered details, without any modern renovations, have collectively established a stable and warm foundation for the space. It is precisely because of this original architectural texture that each room can form a relatively independent perspective relationship with the surrounding mountainous landscape, allowing the natural scenery to become a natural extension of the interior space.
By renting out the house, the two did not make any alterations to the building structure. Instead, they gently intervened in the environment through gardening. They introduced a large number of native plants that are resistant to weather conditions, allowing the house to gradually blend into the natural environment as the plants grow. The interior furnishings emphasized the continuity of materials and colors, highlighting their common preferences for Italian medieval design and Japanese aesthetics. The restrained yet not cold spatial arrangement gives this place both the warmth of life and distinct personal characteristics, naturally accommodating the daily activities of three German Rex cats, Phoenix, Astro, and Pingu, as well as the bulldog Luna. It allows for a relaxed and comfortable interaction between humans and pets.
The rural life has also quietly transformed the working methods of the two. Sally Rounds, while maintaining the Colinwood workshop, created a much larger pottery working space within her residence; Deon Hall also has his own dedicated studio and office. Within this space, the changing of day and night light, the natural undulations of the terrain, and the slow flow of time all become part of the daily experience. This brick and wood Macedonian mountain house thus transcends the essence of a dwelling and becomes a continuous, symbiotic life practice in harmony with nature.
