This is an intriguing project, not only because the owner intentionally set aside the typical residential functions to focus on leisure, entertainment, and weekend g
atherings, but also due to the unique original conditions of the space—a narrow, tall vertical architectural cavity. This challenge adds a layer of design interest that transcends the conventional.
The organic and outward-growing quality of this project is almost serendipitous, like a seed nurtured within the project itself, bursting with vitality. After its completion, this intriguing quality becomes concrete and rich through the translation of design language, enhancing the layers and resonance of spatial interaction both within the structural framework and through the behaviors it encourages.
Upon entering, you find a courtyard-style atrium featuring a tree, an orchid, several ferns, and some carefully arranged stones. Sunlight pours in through the glass curtain wall on the west side, leading further to a staircase and a bookshelf wall that spans two floors. Feng Le Tang is the name chosen by the owner for this space, and a calligrapher was invited to inscribe it, with the scroll hanging prominently on an interior wall that is in the shade but still eye-catching.
The project was officially completed in August, entered the fine-tuning phase in September, and in October, the owner personally organized everything, welcoming friends and family in waves to enjoy the warm atmosphere.
As described by friends and family, this is a surprising space. The first floor features a half-height atrium that serves as both a courtyard and tea room, while the other half functions as a kitchen workspace and dining area. The second floor includes a media space and a corridor, and the third floor consists of two bedrooms that are diagonally offset.
The dynamic diagram of the spatial structure illustrates that the spaces functions are relatively pure, primarily focused on leisure and entertainment. It attempts to simulate an outdoor natural ambiance indoors through elements like plants, skylights, courtyards, and sunlight.
However, this is a space that is difficult to define with a single accurate term. It is both private and open, existing simultaneously indoors and outdoors. It possesses complete residential functions yet does not fit into the category of a typical home. It defies definition, being both mobile and static, and adaptable to ones desires.
The owner and his family are quite satisfied with this sense of indefinability. They have separated the trivialities of family life through physical space, retaining only a pure sense of comfort here. He is convinced that this is the realm of spiritual life. This space liberates itself from reality and the mundane, supporting a return to nature and the self, thus nourishing the ideals and passions of daily life.
Although the space is small, it is still grand. By creating a skylight, we break conventional spatial scales and blur the boundaries between indoors and outdoors, making it possible for the architecture and courtyard to merge into the interior. Within this space, people can sit, stand, or wander freely without constraints.
The original condition of the project is quite simple: it is a rectangular concrete box with a single curtain wall facing west for natural light, approximately 10 meters high and covering an area of about 60 square meters, resembling a primitive plot with certain height restrictions.
Inside the curtain wall, there are two original structural beams that divide the entire light-facing surface into three equal parts from top to bottom. To reduce the impact of western sunlight, it is necessary to build partition walls on the inner side of the curtain wall to address the issues of overheating and excessive sunlight indoors. The introduction of a circular opening becomes the most critical starting point for the space. By using a circular opening with a diameter of 4 meters to deconstruct the original beam and column forms, we effectively control the direct sunlight issue while alleviating the overly rigid presence of the original beams and columns. Thus, the spatial interface begins to grow from this circular opening, and the relationship between the architectural structure and volume extends from here.
In a vertical rectangular mass, a partition wall with a circular opening is inserted, establishing the spatial tone and forming a unique and striking architectural language that injects relaxation and vitality into the originally rigid space.
The circular opening on the partition wall resembles a doorway but functions as a window, controlling the entry of light and the extension of sightlines. The outer side of the circular opening is elevated, while the inner side is paved with outdoor stone, creating two slightly different spatial areas.
The existence of the circular opening also defines the formation of a space. Beneath the circular opening, a long tea table crosses through it in a staggered manner, breaking the boundary between the interior and exterior of the partition wall, thus extending the tea room space horizontally. In this way, the upper beam, the circular opening, and the tea table intertwine
to create a three-dimensional and cohesive space, revealing the spiritual essence of the environment.
The placement of the tea table crossing through the circular opening creates two distinct areas within the tea room: the outer side of the circular opening features tatami mats, while the inner side offers seating, catering to different scene requirements.
Empty and high is the original characteristic of the project. The circular opening on the west side defines the spatial interface while also providing an important basis for the existence of the atrium courtyard in the vertical direction. Especially when sunlight streams in from above, passing through the high windows of the top terrace and the circular opening, it casts long, slanted shadows, making the outdoor experience suddenly rich and clear.
As a symbol, the circular opening also subconsciously reminds us of the various possibilities of the courtyard within the Eastern context.
The entrance is cleverly positioned at the intersection of the atrium and the boundary of the first floor, creating a sensation of expansion and contraction that all converges in the moment of entry. Under this strong contrast, the atrium courtyard area becomes even more spacious, and the overall spatial experience thus feels transparent and bright.
To enhance the vertical spatial penetration, high color temperature ceiling lights are used at the top of the atrium area to simulate a skylight under natural light, forming a light source that projects downwards from above. This, combined with the natural light entering from the west, creates a correspondence between the solid and the void, making the atrium itself and the courtyard below align more closely with an outdoor natural state.
Rooms, partition walls, and the connecting corridors enclose the courtyard. While delineating areas, windows and openings are created in the walls to manage a well-structured relationship of density and openness, establishing visual connections and increasing spatial layers, allowing each level of the atrium to present different views and sensations.
The atrium serves as a passage for light, as well as a conduit for air circulation and visual extension. The three levels of space are linked together by a vertical atrium, forming a micro vertical structure with a certain sense of structure and volume.
A white lightweight steel staircase is simply arranged at the end of the public area on the first floor. The two parallel sections of the staircase, with their straight and slender lines, appear light and airy, creating a stark contrast with the heavy concrete walls of the building, while extending the movement lines and connecting the spaces within this contrast.
On the inner side of the staircase, there are bookshelves that reach two stories high. The bookshelves are a darker wood color, while the white staircase floats in front of them, creating a sense of depth and becoming another visual direction and focal point on the first floor, aside from the circular openings. At the same time, the juxtaposition of the bookshelves and the staircase also conveys a sense of a ladder of knowledge.
The staircase, resembling a gangway, is external, concise, and open. It simulates an environment that comes from outside the building, alongside the trees and stones in the courtyard. Climbing the staircase step by step to seek books and read offers a different kind of enjoyment.
The staircase connects the three levels of space along the movement line. It also links the corridor, the gray space at the staircases turn, and the wandering corridor outside the circular openings. Within the entire internal space, this creates a continuity of reality and illusion, emphasizing the interaction and transparency of the space in both movement and sight, allowing for endless possibilities for aimless wandering and reflection within the space.
The areas at the corners of the staircase and the ends of the corridors can be flexibly utilized for placing items, arranging flowers, or playing the piano, forming a small visual scene. These spaces can be enjoyed or used for rest. At the same time, these gray spaces enhance the overall coherence of the building, eliminating the barriers between the inside and outside, and allowing the emotional atmosphere of the space to fully develop and settle.
In this project, Eastern does not exist as a pursuit but rather as a natural outcome. The characteristics of Eastern humanities are ultimately reflected in the round openings that block the western sun, the courtyard-like small scenes, the Chinese tea table, as well as the lattice and paper sliding doors, and are also manifested in the two bedrooms located between the third floor.
The two bedrooms are like two staggered square boxes, intersecting to enclose a hollow area that embraces a skylight. Looking down, one can see the double-height space of the first floor. Here, the continuity and penetration of space form a closed loop, and the movement transforms, creating a mutual gaze between the bedrooms. The horizontal square windows of the tatami room introduce the simulated landscape from the opposite outer wall into the interior like a scroll painting.
The two bedrooms are distributed diagonally apart, ensuring that both can receive natural light while also providing a sense of transparency and extension, creating various experiences of reflection and observation in the transitional space.
Similarly, the consideration of plants is not entirely based on replicating a garden, but the result does seem to pay homage to Eastern gardens in a subtle way.
Using the twisted forms of trees, the sparse bamboo, and the roughness of stones serves to soften the rigidity of the architectural form on one hand, while on the other, it creates a natural atmosphere, simulating an outdoor experience. The selection of indoor plants becomes crucial and cautious, as it must consider issues of light, moisture, temperature, and ventilation. Thus, to create a sense of abundant natural life with a limited number of plants indeed requires employing a method reminiscent of landscape painting.
At the core of the courtyard stands an easy-to-maintain Hawaiian flowering tree, while orchids are placed in areas receiving more sunlight, and ferns that tolerate shade are planted beneath the stairs. The combination of stones and moss forms miniature landscape scenes.
Another surprise in the space is on the inner wall of the first-floor dining room. A circular wall lamp, through the movement of equally sized circular covers, can simulate the phases of the moon. This small interactive space creates entirely different situations and atmospheres, captivating many visitors and tightening the connection between space and emotion.
The design of the moon is filled with childlike charm, embodying a familys care and love for their children. At the same time, it continues the circular symbol, transforming it into the shape of a lamp.
The sun and moon shine together at times, and the moons shadow flickers at others. When night falls and the lights come on, this place presents a different scene.
Perhaps more importantly, do not forget: at this moment, outside the window, tall buildings stand in rows, vehicles weave in and out, and the citys most prosperous area is precisely where the project is located—Fengletang, a hidden retreat that enjoys tranquility amidst the urban confines.
The lighting is soft, and the night is tranquil as such.
