On the outskirts of Antwerp, Belgium, a minimalist building stands quietly among the greenery. This is the Heterotopia created by architect Nicolas Schuybroek for a couple of art collectors - a private residence specially designed to accommodate contemporary art masterpieces. Inspired by the concept of Heterotopia proposed by Michel Foucault, the building emphasizes the disconnection from daily reality, creating an ideal space for placement and contemplation for artworks.
The residence is located on a 20-meter-square base, with geometric blocks stacked in a staggered manner, forming a closed and layered volume. The textured facade composed of soil, cement and gravel, along with the materials that develop patina over time due to oxidation, jointly infuse this building with a warm and serene atmosphere. Pushing open the heavy steel door, visitors step into a dreamy world surrounded by sunlight and art.
The space unfolds around the central atrium. Sunlight spills down from the roof, illuminating the works of artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Roni Horn and Leon Spilliaert. The interior of the building is composed of bone-colored walls, walnut wood, lava gravel and ancient wooden ladders, which connect functionality and poetry. The low Japanese-style window frames present the scene of outdoor bonsai, as if nature has also been collected as a collection.
Schuybroek avoids museum-like indifference and creates a warm, restrained and individualistic residence through fine materials and selected furniture - including Rietvelds Zig Zag chair and the works of Jeanneret. For him, this is not merely a residence; it is a spiritual sanctuary where architecture serves as a medium and art and design interweave and resonate.
