The new studio of DIA Studio is located in an emerging non-standard commercial park beside the Xiong’er River in Zhengzhou. This will be the long-term spatial coordinate for DIA Studio. Surrounded by greenery, the studio reveals the four seasons upon opening the door, where design routines, social life, and natural landscapes intertwine, nearly realizing all imaginations of an idealized workspace.
Creative Extension: A Non-Standard Office Vessel
Designers are often busy constructing life scenarios for others but rarely invest time in their own life scripts. Recognizing that designers’ work and life inevitably overlap, DIA Studio envisioned the studio as both a “creative vessel” and an “extension of home.” Breaking away from conventional enclosed workspaces, they conceived a transparent, multifunctional non-standard environment that encourages formal and informal activities—collaboration, leisure, rest, and socializing.
Overall view of office area
Within the original 130 sqm floor area and 4.3-meter ceiling height, split-level spaces were introduced to flexibly reorganize dynamic and static functions. The core public area, dining bar, meeting room, and material library occupy the ground floor, while the workspace and rest area are on the upper level. Circulation spaces—stairs, corridors, and bridges—were designed to foster interaction, transforming mundane transitions into daily “creative interludes.”
The second-floor workspace rejects heavy ornamentation, adopting exposed concrete ceilings and revealing structural columns and beams to echo minimalist architectural language and sustainable principles. Ceiling lighting is omitted; instead, integrated desk lamps illuminate individual workstations. Unobstructed seating encourages boundary-free, egalitarian collaboration.
Adjacent to the workspace, the rest area on the upper level features beds for colleagues, connected via a perforated bridge. Overlooking the lower floor from the bridge, one immediately senses the space’s通透通透 (translucency) and vitality. While the two levels appear independent, their functions interlock seamlessly. The ground floor houses the dining bar, material library, and meeting room beneath the workspace and rest area. Despite lowered ceilings, the open layout and vibrant colors prevent a sense of confinement. The interplay of varying heights creates dynamic balance, injecting energy into the work environment.
Retreating into Life: Multifaceted Daily Scenes
Though an architecture studio, the design intentionally “lets work retreat for life.” Social and living zones dominate, with nearly all spaces remaining semi-open to foster connection while respecting preferences for activity or tranquility.
The public space at ground floor
The public lounge faces the riverside terrace, offering the studio’s most expansive views and double-height sunlight. A relaxed social area—defined by sofas and a fireplace—becomes a humanistic focal point, where casual conversations dissolve workday tensions. The connected dining bar features rear wall windows filtering light, while a cozy low-ceilinged meeting room nestles beneath the rest area. Behind the fireplace, a sunken tea zone offers introverts a serene refuge for recharging.
Windows frame nature as living artworks. Their scales and positions were meticulously adjusted to capture “just-right” views, harmonizing indoor and outdoor boundaries. Such details animate the space with seasonal and temporal rhythms, as if the architecture breathes, blending leisure and design intuition.
Borrowing Nature: The Expressions of Space
The spatial rhythm, ceiling heights, and stepped transitions create a garden-like experience. The terrace floor extends indoors, blurring exterior-interior boundaries. Sustainable materials dominate: brown bricks flow from outside to inside, granite with raw textures adorns the bar and fireplace, and dark stone-plastic flooring resists potential water damage. Steel and wood interplay, contrasting ruggedness with softness. This material dialogue adds layers of interest to work and life.
Indoor and outdoor material continuation
Regarding the studio design, Li Xinlei, founder of DIA Studio, reflects: “Intuition outweighed rationality here.” By embracing raw authenticity and borrowing scenery from nature, the studio becomes a creative field where seasons and life unfold.
