This residence, located in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, New York (NY), was renovated by the design firm Bespoke Only. The brownstone building where the project is situated was built in 1878 and belongs to the Neo-Grec style. When the design team got involved, they were confronted with a historical building with distinct era imprints, which was created by architect John Mumford and converted into apartments in 2008. These established structures and traces provide a unique and complex backdrop for spatial reconstruction, and also prompt design to strike a delicate balance between respecting the original appearance and meeting contemporary life needs.

业主的需求看似简单，却极具挑战性，希望新的居所能拥有自然顺畅的流线、清晰而有序的结构，并能够呈现自身的生活叙事。空间既需保留建筑的历史韵味，又要具备紧凑、现代的生活感，这无疑要求设计在不同时间层之间建立温和而连贯的对话。在此基础上，屋主夫妇希望空间能蕴含某种与中华文化记忆相关的深层联系，使居住体验带有亲近感与文化归属。

The owners demands seem simple but are highly challenging. They hope that the new residence can have a natural and smooth flow line, a clear and orderly structure, and be able to present their own life narrative. The space should not only retain the historical charm of the building but also possess a compact and modern sense of life. This undoubtedly requires the design to establish a gentle and coherent dialogue between different time layers. On this basis, the homeowners hope that the space can contain some deep connection related to the memory of Chinese culture, making the living experience feel close and culturally belonging.

The neighborhood context of Clinton Hill has an undeniable diversity. Victorian style, Beaux-Arts, Queen Anne style and Neo-Greek Revival style interweave with each other, presenting the city with an open and inclusive temperament. This multi-faceted framework also enables Bespoke Only to transcend geographical and temporal boundaries in its conception, attempting to find some implicit common ground between the architectural language of Brooklyn and the urban landscape of 19th-century Shanghai, thereby making cultural integration a natural process rather than a deliberate collage.

The reorganized upper space is re-arranged around contemporary lifestyles. The design incorporates traditional Chinese wooden elements such as carved wooden doors and hollowed-out wooden boards, complemented by decorative glass and intricate and detailed tiles, establishing a new balance between a sense of history and regional characteristics in the space. The re-planned master suite unfolds in an elegant and restrained manner, presenting a comfort and refinement similar to that of a boutique hotel, and becomes the core scene in the entire residential narrative. The design depicts a soft yet clear connection between the old and the new.
