A 1960s red-brown brick old pastors house located in Mainz, Germany, has been transformed into a new space by the ingenious design of interior designer Constanze Ladner. In 2020, when she and her husband moved into this house, the original Klinker exterior walls, red-brown floor tiles, and old linen oilcloth remained in good condition. However, Ladner was soon drawn to the unique lines of the building, the texture of the brick surface, and the peaceful, natural garden outside the window, which sparked her desire to explore the potential of the space.

In order to make this 1960s building suitable for modern life, she completed the overall renovation from conceptual design to construction completion within just six weeks. Radner drew inspiration from the surrounding gardens and proposed a design scheme that combined soft and rich colors: the walls of the living room and the furniture in the study were painted in a calm green, while the lemon-yellow velvet sofa in the center injected a bright and lively atmosphere into the space; the colors of the kitchen and the dining area extended from deep Burgundy red to warm terracotta, running through the walls, ceilings and front panels of the cabinets, creating a rich and warm layering effect.

The diversity of materials is the key to Radners creation of a sense of comfort. The ingenious combination of velvet, soft carpets, lightweight curtains and natural wood gives the interior space a rich texture while also exuding a sense of warmth and intimacy. The integration of furniture with the space, and the harmony between colors and materials, have brought a touch of warmth and vitality to the otherwise somewhat cold 1960s architecture.

After renovation, this old vicarage was transformed from a cold brick house into a colorful and cozy dwelling. Radners design demonstrated the power of color and materials in the space: through careful planning and matching, traditional architecture could quickly be infused with a modern touch, allowing the occupants to feel harmony, peace and comfort in their home.
