Vaulting Loft 是建筑事务所 MATA 近期完成的一项住宅改造项目，位于伦敦汉普斯特德（Hampstead）一栋维多利亚时期独立住宅的顶层。项目最初被设定为一套高标准出租公寓，但随着设计不断深入，空间所蕴含的可能性逐渐显现，最终促使业主决定将其转为一家人长期居住的家庭住宅。这一转变，也从侧面印证了 MATA 创始合伙人丹·马克斯（Dan Marks）及其团队对空间判断的精准与设计策略的成熟。

Vaulting Loft is a recent residential renovation project completed by the architectural firm MATA. It is located on the top floor of a Victorian-era detached house in Hampstead, London. Initially, the project was designed as a high-standard rental apartment, but as the design process continued, the potential of the space gradually emerged, eventually prompting the owner to decide to convert it into a family home for long-term residence. This transformation also serves as an illustration of the precision of MATAs founding partner Dan Marks and his teams spatial judgment and the maturity of their design strategies.

项目所在建筑位于保护区内，原先被划分为五套独立公寓，并由同一业主持有。在此前陆续完成其中数个单元的改造后，MATA 得以以更整体的视角介入整栋建筑的更新。Vaulting Loft 的核心突破，来自对原有屋顶结构的重新理解，设计团队填补了两片坡屋顶脊线之间的“谷地”，由此塑造出一个最高点达 4.8 米的通高空间。宛如倒置船体般的屋顶结构，在结构工程师的协作下被悬置于室内上方，既体现出高度精密的工程控制，也成为定义空间气质的关键元素。

The building where the project is located is within a protected area. It was originally divided into five separate apartments and owned by the same property owner. After the renovation of several units was completed successively, MATA was able to intervene in the entire buildings renovation from a more comprehensive perspective. The core breakthrough of Vaulting Loft came from a new understanding of the original roof structure. The design team filled the valley between the two sloping roof ridges, thereby creating a full-height space with a maximum height of 4.8 meters. The roof structure resembling an inverted ship hull was suspended above the interior with the collaboration of the structural engineers. It not only demonstrates highly precise engineering control but also becomes a key element defining the spaces atmosphere.

这一结构策略显著释放了平面布局的自由度，并为未来可能的功能变化预留了弹性。在此基础上，设计引入了一处夹层空间，以温润的橡木体量嵌置于纯白色屋顶之下。夹层并非简单叠加的楼板，而是一件经过精细雕刻的空间实体，储藏空间、客用卫生间、卧室入口以及通往夹层的楼梯被整合其中，形成一条紧凑而连贯的室内动线。

This structural strategy significantly enhances the flexibility of the floor plan and reserves elasticity for potential future functional changes. On this basis, the design incorporates a mezzanine space, which is embedded beneath a pure white roof in the form of a warm oak volume. The mezzanine is not simply a superimposed floor slab, but rather a finely carved spatial entity. The storage space, guest bathroom, bedroom entrance, and staircase leading to the mezzanine are all integrated within it, forming a compact and coherent indoor circulation.

Vaulting Loft 并未依赖昂贵或夸张的材料，而是通过尺度变化与空间节奏的精确控制，逐步建立起情感层次。屋顶在厨房区域从最高点迅速下压至接近腰部的高度，营造出贴近身体尺度的日常场景；而当人们绕过夹层体量的转角，挑高空间再次豁然展开，形成鲜明对比与强烈的空间发现感。这种在开阔与收敛之间不断切换的体验，构成了 Vaulting Loft 最具说服力的建筑表达。

Vaulting Loft does not rely on expensive or extravagant materials. Instead, through the precise control of scale changes and spatial rhythm, it gradually builds up emotional layers. The roof in the kitchen area rapidly descends from the highest point to a height close to the waist, creating a daily scene that is close to the scale of the human body; when people pass around the corner of the mezzanine volume, the high space suddenly opens up again, creating a sharp contrast and a strong sense of spatial discovery. This continuous switching between openness and convergence experience constitutes the most persuasive architectural expression of Vaulting Loft.
