Design reality
Perhaps we won’t meet again after dawn, yet that “moment” lingers like steam in a bathroom, long unwilling to fade. In Huanghua, as daylight recedes, the night often stretches out in silence and length. AFLOAT emerges to break that stillness—more than just a bar, it is the city’s first consciously lit “nocturnal sanctuary”. Here, we wish to offer weary souls a temporary port to break free from the ground and drift in liberty.

Exterior of the bar
“AFLOAT” is the spatial philosophy, and the experience we hope to impart to every guest. Expansive glass facades dissolve the boundary between inside and out, transforming the entrance into a tense, transparent ribbon of color. Even before pushing the door, an intense yet airy atmosphere envelops you, extending an invitation: Here, lay down your weight. When night is tinted with color, the true vitality of this place begins.

Color is the native language of this space. We have built a complete chromatic emotional system, where each hue is distinguished by its energy and corresponds to a specific emotional value: red for passion, blue for reflection, green for renewal, and purple for liberation. This 360-degree immersive color energy resonates with every state of mind. You may choose to wrap yourself in an orange warmth, or lose yourself in a purple mystery. From the moment you step inside, let color be your guide—navigating you toward the emotional coordinates meant for you tonight.
Bar counter area
Upon stepping into the space, one’s gaze is naturally drawn to the central bar. Above it, a suspended circular soft-panel lamp glows gently—not merely as a light source, but as the visual poetry of “AFLOAT”.Deliberately moving away from traditional ceiling-mounted lighting, we let the fixture hang like a self-illuminating celestial body, detached from physical connection, purely adrift in mid-air. This creation of “visual weightlessness” softens the tangible tie between ceiling and luminaire, as if light itself has broken free from gravity, floating at ease. It echoes the very name “AFLOAT” ,allowing the core concept of the space to be seen and felt—from the very first glance.

The circular silhouette of the lamp crowns this “isolated island” with a soft corona of light. A gentle curtain of illumination descends, quietly delineating a warm and independent zone, enveloping the bar as the drifting nucleus of the space. Here, people gather, converse, and savor their drinks—as if mooring temporarily on a luminous floating island, intimately connected to, yet gracefully detached from, the world around them. This is far more than a lighting installation; it is a spatial metaphor for floating: light breaks free from constraint, people shed their weight, and within the space between a raised glass and a hushed conversation, they embrace a moment of weightless freedom.

In the casual seating area, the spacing between seats has been deliberately condensed to foster a sense of intimacy without crowding—naturally bringing people closer together. This layout subtly encourages eye contact and quiet conversation among strangers, allowing even solitary moments to feel accompanied rather than lonely. The area is framed by transparent boundaries on both sides: one features a floor-to-ceiling glass facade, while the other is equipped with a system of flexible folding glass windows. This design intentionally dissolves the physical divide between indoors and outdoors, allowing the warm glow and dynamic atmosphere of the bar to extend outward, while simultaneously drawing the street scene and evening ambiance inside—creating a silent, spatial dialogue. As the visual foundation of the space, the walls retain the raw, textured finish of exposed concrete. The mottled surfaces and varied shades of gray infuse the area with industrial authenticity and a narrative sense of time-worn character. This “unfinished” material language contrasts playfully with the lightness and transparency of the glass—anchoring the tactile tone of the space while quietly echoing, through the interplay of light and shadow, the philosophical tension between solid and void, weight and weightlessness inherent in the theme of “AFLOAT”.

This boundary formed by the red stainless-steel sliding door and transparent glass engages in the most dramatic visual dialogue within the space. The red door, crafted from cool stainless steel and finished with a deep, subdued red, is completely opaque—acting as a resolute barrier that gently envelops the interior, reinforcing the privacy and sanctuary befitting a “nocturnal shelter”.In absolute contrast stands the full-height transparent glass, occupying about three-quarters of the expanse. It unframingly turns the nightscape outside into a flowing canvas—perhaps scattered lights from buildings across the street, occasional glimpses of passing vehicles, or the deep night sky itself. The juxtaposition of this “solid” and “void”, this “enclosure” and “openness”, in a 1:3 ratio creates a subtle yet potent spatial tension. The sliding door suggests inwardness, certainty, and a hint of warmth; the glass serves as an outward-facing, receptive, and calm observer. Together, they define a unique psychological field: from inside, one may retreat behind the sheltering red, wrapped in a sense of security, or gaze beyond it, through the glass, maintaining a lucid yet detached connection to the outside world. This is not merely a physical boundary but an interface for emotional transition. The red sliding door echoes the passion and energy of the interior’s “chromatic emotional system”, while the transparent glass metaphorically opens toward the world outside, inviting both breath and perspective. Here, the sanctuary is not a sealed cocoon but a posture of coexisting with the world—on one’s own terms. You may safely linger in your own night, while still embracing the entirety of the tranquil evening beyond.

The restroom is conceived as a metaphorical fissure in time, inspired by the notion of a “black hole”—a space where time can be imagined as stretchable, foldable, yet fundamentally irreversible. This philosophical concept is translated into an immersive sensory experience through material, light, and color. The space is enveloped in deep black, with walls fully cloaked in the hue—absorbing light and blurring boundaries, creating a disorienting, weightless immersion. Lighting is restrained to subtle accents of red, like a faint breath in the dark, forming a potent yet disciplined contrast between light and shadow. This not only intensifies visual tension but also suggests that even within absolute darkness, traces of warmth and the passage of time persist. The washbasin area becomes the visual focal point and energetic node within this shadowed realm. Here, the mirror plays a pivotal role: beyond its functional reflection, it extends the red glow and LED signage into infinity, generating overlapping visual echoes and cycles—as though time itself is folded and duplicated here, creating an endless visual reverberation. The restroom is not merely a functional zone but a vessel for emotional and philosophical metaphor. Through extreme black and restrained red, it tells an abstract story of time, existence, and perception—here, light is not merely illuminated but felt, and time not measured but experienced.

The staircase leading to the second floor is conceived as a luminous passage—a philosophical transition within the spatial narrative, connecting what lies below with what awaits above.Continuing the metaphor of the “fold in time” introduced in the restroom, it is grounded by deep black walls that draw the gaze into a shadowed depth. In striking dialogue with this darkness, a red luminous soft-panel light rises vertically from the wall, extending seamlessly up to the ceiling—forming a continuous red fissure of light that cuts through both vertical and horizontal planes. Walking through it, one moves as if passing between layers of light and shadow. Each step upward feels like an approach toward another threshold of time and space. The red glow, cast softly from the side, is never glaring—instead, it lends the ascent an immersive, almost ceremonial quality, signaling both a spatial shift and an emotional transition.

Theprivate room on the second floor is conceived as a breathable theatrical interface—suspended between openness and enclosure, watching and being watched, like a miniature theater box floating in mid-air.The space is designed with a semi-open structure. When the curtains are drawn back, a broad visual corridor seamlessly connects the second floor with the level below. Standing at the edge of the balcony, guests can overlook the shifting interplay of light and shadow in the casual seating area, the central luminous halo above the bar, and even the undulating waves of color throughout the space. This vertical visual connection preserves the independence of the private zone while allowing a gentle interplay with the energetic public area below.

We use the top floor of a ruind building, and try to break the limit of time and space. feels like we go throgh the universe, feeling the past and the future, unkonwn space and black hoe. Everything is a circle and a contradiction. light and dark, deficiency and excess, true and false, day and night…..
